Funeral Insurance NZ Compared: Chubb, AA Life, Seniors, OneChoice, Just Insurance and Momentum Life

Compare Chubb Funeral Insurance, AA Life Funeral Cover, Seniors Funeral Insurance, Just Insurance, OneChoice and Momentum Life Funeral Insurance.

If you search Google for funeral insurance, funeral insurance NZ or seniors funeral insurance, a consistent group of names tends to appear. Chubb Funeral Insurance, AA Life Funeral Cover, Seniors New Zealand, Momentum Life Funeral Insurance, Just Insurance and OneChoice are the names most likely to show in sponsored results, ordinary rankings and the AI overview. That visibility reflects their standing in funeral cover. It is not a ranking of which policy is best.

All of these are reputable New Zealand funeral cover options, and each is worthy of consideration. This article sets out what is generally available, not a personal recommendation. For a premium quotation, or the detail of a policy wording, contact the insurer or an intermediary who arranges that cover. We do not comment on service or claims performance, because we have not had first-hand experience of every service or claims team.

What we can compare is the published cover amount, the entry age, and whether payments cease while cover continues. Figures were taken from each insurer’s website on 5 October 2026. They are not a guide to what will suit you. No single company is the perfect fit for every age and cover amount.

This comment is prepared in good faith. It may become outdated if an insurer later changes a limit, an entry age or a paid-up age.

What these funeral plans NZ have in common

Funeral insurance, also called funeral cover, pays a lump sum towards funeral costs and other immediate bills. Five of these six brands publish a maximum of $30,000. The differences that matter first are the minimum, the age at which you can still apply, and the point after which premiums can stop.

NZ Seniors: $3,000 to $30,000. Entry ages 18 to 79. No further premiums after the 85th birthday; cover continues. Policy ends at 100.

OneChoice: $3,000 to $30,000. Entry ages 18 to 79. No more premiums after age 85; cover can continue without further payment.

Momentum Life: $3,000 to $30,000. Entry ages 40 to 75. From the 89th birthday, no further premiums while cover remains.

AA Life: $5,000 to $30,000. Entry ages 50 to 79. Premiums payable until the policy anniversary after the 90th birthday, then cover continues at no extra cost.

Just Insurance: $3,000 to $30,000. Entry ages 50 to 80. Cover is described as lasting a lifetime. No further payments from the policy anniversary after the 90th birthday.

Chubb Life: up to $30,000. Entry ages 50 to 80. Premiums paid until a claim, age 90, or long-term care as defined. No minimum was stated on the page checked.

NZ Seniors and OneChoice funeral insurance

NZ Seniors publishes Seniors Funeral Insurance from $3,000 to $30,000 for New Zealand residents aged 18 to 79, the widest entry band here. From the 85th birthday it stops charging for the cover. It also adds 25% bonus cover at 85, allows a 75% cash-out from 85 that ends the policy, and ends the policy at 100 with 125% of the cover amount paid. That page was dated 21 August 2025.

OneChoice is published on a similar frame: $3,000 to $30,000, ages 18 to 79, and no more premiums after 85, with cover able to continue. It also publishes a 25% bonus at 85 and a 75% cash-out after 85. That cash-out ends the policy and, on the page checked, does not include the bonus. Similar headlines do not mean the contracts are the same.

Momentum Life funeral insurance

Momentum Life publishes $3,000 to $30,000 for New Zealanders aged 40 to 75, the tightest upper age in this comparison. From the 89th birthday, no further premiums are payable while the cover remains. Family cover can be arranged for up to four people.

AA Life funeral cover

AA Life Funeral Cover runs from $5,000 to $30,000, so the minimum sits above the $3,000 floor used elsewhere. Entry is aged 50 to 79. Premiums are payable until the policy anniversary after the 90th birthday, and the cover then continues at no extra cost. Cover can be arranged for someone else, and a beneficiary can be nominated.

Just Insurance and Chubb Life funeral cover

Just Insurance publishes $3,000 to $30,000, with guaranteed acceptance for New Zealand residents aged 50 to 80. With Chubb, it is one of two names here that still shows an entry age of 80. Cover is described as lasting a lifetime, with no further payments from the policy anniversary after the 90th birthday.

Chubb Life Funeral Cover is for ages 50 to 80, up to $30,000, and each life is limited to $30,000 across all Chubb funeral cover policies. No minimum was stated on the page checked. Premiums are paid until a claim, until the life insured reaches 90, or until long-term care as defined. A long-term care premium waiver, if accepted, stops future premiums for that cover while it continues. That is not the same mechanism as the age-85 or age-89 rules above.

How to read a funeral cover comparison

Three checks come before price. Entry age is a hard gate: Momentum Life stops at 75 on the page checked, AA Life at 79, NZ Seniors and OneChoice at 79, and Just Insurance and Chubb at 80. The benefit should match the funeral expected, not the maximum advertised. Paid-up ages differ at 85, 89 and the anniversary after 90. Chubb’s rule is a claim, age 90, or long-term care.

Cheap funeral insurance is a common search and a weak way to choose. The same amount does not cost the same at every age, so no premiums are shown here.

Where an independent review helps

Insurance Helpline is an independent New Zealand insurance advisory service, not one of the insurers in this comparison. We can talk through the cover amount, entry age and paid-up age that apply to you, then arrange funeral insurance through our insurer network where that is the right product. The conversation is at no cost to you. A familiar name in a search result is a shortlist, not a decision.

FAQs

  • What cover amount can funeral insurance NZ provide?
On 5 October 2026 the usual published maximum was $30,000. Minimums were mostly $3,000. AA Life published $5,000. Chubb stated a $30,000 maximum and no minimum on the page reviewed.
  • What age can I apply for nz funeral insurance?
Published ranges here are 18 to 79, 40 to 75, 50 to 79, and 50 to 80. Check the brand, not the category.
  • Do funeral insurance premiums stop at a set age?
Often, but not on the same date. NZ Seniors and OneChoice use 85. Momentum Life uses the 89th birthday. AA Life and Just Insurance use the policy anniversary after 90. Chubb’s rule is different and needs its own wording.
  • Is seniors funeral insurance a different product type?
No. It is a product name used by NZ Seniors, not a separate class of insurance. Compare the benefit, entry age and paid-up age.
  • Will the top Google result be the best fit?
Not necessarily. Ads and AI summaries often repeat the same names. Fit depends on age, cover and how long you will pay.
  • Can Insurance Helpline arrange a quotation?
Yes. We can arrange funeral insurance NZ through insurers we work with. Advice is at no cost. Have the policy conditions explained before you apply.
